Another easy 5

Today was a pretty easy 5 mile run. I almost decided to run an extra mile, but I thought I would just stick to my plan. I’m scheduled to run 6 miles for the next 4 Sundays so no need to rush it now.

Looking back at my last 4 5-mile runs, today’s was the fastest and at a slightly lower heart rate. Here are the numbers:

Date Time min/mile Avg HR
9/10 1:01:30 12:18 152
9/17 1:01:25 12:17 153
9/24 55:22 11:05 152
10/8 53:36 10:40 151

This is without even trying to increase my speed.

Recovering from a bad run

As I mentioned recently, I had a pretty bad run this past Sunday.  I was scheduled to run 5 miles, but I barely made 3 miles.

Since I wanted to keep my weekly mileage on track for the week, I ran an extra mile on both Tuesday and Wednesday and I finished the week at 13 miles.  Right on schedule.

I made some adjustments.  I have stopped using the elliptical trainer so my legs are a lot fresher.  I’ve also started to eat a little more….not a lot, a little, but since I’m not using the elliptical trainer, my calorie deficit isn’t as large as it has been.

I’m feeling pretty good now, but the real test would be to see how I fare on my next 5 mile run on Sunday.

Bonking after 3 miles

I was supposed to run 5 miles today, but I just died and couldn’t make it.  I felt terrible after the first mile and I pushed myself to run an extra couple miles so I would have run at least 3 miles, but I couldn’t make the full 5 miles.

I have run 5 miles on 3 previous Sundays and last week Sunday it was super easy.  I felt as though I could have gone another mile.

It’s now time to take a step back and evaluate what went wrong.  I think the most obvious problem is that I may be doing too much exercise on my non-running days.  In the last 1-2 weeks, I’ve been doing 1 hour on the elliptical trainer AND 20-40 mins on the days that I’ve been running 2-3 miles.  I think my legs are just too tired.

I’m going to try to do this week with just running and see how that works out.
