I’ve Reached My Current Mileage Limit!

Since running, I’ve always felt that come the end of the week, I could have done a little more.  Maybe ran an extra day or one or two extra miles.  Well, I don’t that’s the case anymore.

This week I ran 35 miles for the first time and I think I have definitely reached the most I can run in a week.  My legs have been tired this whole week and it was somewhat of a struggle to run the 35 miles.  Today is a rest day and I definitely need it.

I ran the 35 miles over 5 days (as I rest for 2 days) so that means I averaged 7 miles on my running days.

I definitely wouldn’t be increasing my mileage for a while as I need to stay at this level until I can do it comfortably before moving up to 40 miles per week.  I’ll do 35 miles this coming week, but then I would have a few fairly low-mileage weeks after that as I have my 10K race and then I have a business trip to make the first week of March.  That actually works out well as these weeks would be my race taper and mileage cut-back weeks.

I need to work on my eating as it’s been atrocious.  I’ve been eating everything in sight.  The only thing that is keeping my weight down is the volume of running I’m doing.

12-Mile Run

I can still remember the feeling I had after running 10 miles for the first time. It was an extraordinary accomplishment for me. I have been running 10 miles every Sunday for quite some time and I decided to bump it to the next level and I ran 12 miles today.

I didn’t get the same sense of accomplishment as I did when I first ran 10 miles, but it felt great. I guess 10 miles will always be special as it was the first time I ran in the double digits.

On today’s run, I ate an energy gel at about 6.2 miles and by about mile 8, it kicked in and I felt as though I had a ton of energy. This lasted for a couple miles and I even found myself singing out loud to my music. Luckily no one was around as they would have certainly thought I was mad.

By about mile 10.5 - 11, I started to feel tired again, but I managed to push on and finish the 12 miles. I think I need to take 2 energy gels the next time. I’ll eat the first one at mile 6 like today, but eat another one at around 8.5 miles so it’ll kick in for the last 1.5 to 2 miles.

I’m a little sore and I’m limping around, but it’s a good sore feeling.

My knee held up only hurting a bit around mile 7, but it stopped hurting within a mile. I’m hoping my knee pains are going to be behind me very soon.

I’m hoping to run 35 miles this week.

So far, things are starting to look good as I continue my journey to Boston.

January Progress

January has been a good month for me.  My knee pains seem to be subsiding.  Every day that I run, I seem to get less and less pain.  Based on the progress I’ve been making, I may well be pain-free in a few weeks.

Except for a run I had to abandon early in the month, I was able to run quite a bit.  I ran 10 miles every Sunday and I managed to log 134 miles for the entire month.  My best ever month!

I was able to lose 5 lbs for the month.  I am very happy with this progress, especially in light of how badly I’ve been eating.  I ate everything in sight!  The amount of running I’m doing is the only reason I managed to lose any weight.

I’m now 15 lbs from my goal of 160 lbs.
